It is time to introduce the newest “Six for $60-Something” Sampler!
Never heard of this sampler and want to know what it’s about?
Six wines, hand-selected by me, that represent a range of styles – all hovering around the $10 price point. Each wine is available by the bottle or case, but as I often say, for maximum pleasure you should take the whole sampler.
The “Six for $60-Something” is highly recommended to those learning about wines, trying to stock their wine rack with affordable and tasty adult beverages, or wanting to bring a gift to someone hosting a party.
So how does this work? 2011 KIR-YIANNI “AKAKIES” ROSÉ
It’s hot! Time to get down with a cold glass of DRY Rosé – right?
I’m super pumped about this sampler because for the first time ever I bring you two excellent Greek wines to change your perception of the wines from this country.
I started in the business in Portland, Oregon and a local distributor named “Famous Dino” was importing the wines of some very prominent Greek producers, including Kir-Yianni. It was then that I learned that their was some truly great “terroir” in Greece, and the world would soon learn about it!
Founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris, it is now under the leadership of his son, Stellios. Based in Northwestern Greece, the winery is most acclaimed for its excellent red wines made from the Xinomavro grape varietal.
Xinomavro produces full-bodied red wines and makes an excellent base for this delicious dry Rosé! The grapes come from the Amyndeon vineyards on the shores of Lake Vegoritis. Surrounding these vineyards are Accacias, which lends its name to this wine. The soil is sandy and poor, and the result is low-yielding grapes with intensity.
This deeply colored Rosé is teeming with notes of strawberry and citrus on the nose. The palate has depth, but maintains a bright, refreshing quality that keeps you coming back, glass after glass.

2009 FRATELLI REVELLO BARBERA D’ALBA
Having just traveled back from Piedmont earlier in the month, I can personally attest that there aren’t a whole lot of folks sitting around on warm summer days drinking a bottle of Barolo!
If you are a fan of the wines of Piedmont, Italy – what are you to do in summer?
Barbera is great any time of year, but I really love it during the summer, when its bright acidity and low tannins make it thirst quenching and suitable with grilled foods.
So I scored an insane, one-time deal on this mighty delicious Barbera d’Alba from the Revello family. Located in Annunziata in La Morra, the winery is run by brothers, Carlo and Lorenzo. They have been producing the wines since 1992, and have been helped by their friend and famed Barolo producer, Elio Altare.
This Barbera d’Alba comes from vineyards in the Annunziata village. The fermentation and aging of this wine are done completely in stainless steel tanks to preserve the vibrancy of the fruit.
This has bright juicy cherry notes, along with hints of herbs and spices, and a bright, balanced finish. Whether it be white or red meat, from chicken to lamb, this Barbera will be well suited to your summertime grilling sessions!
2011 SEMELI WINERY DRY WHITE WINE
This delicious summer white wine comes from Semeli Estate, a winery started in 1979 with the goal of quality over quantity. Over the last 30 years, the winery has expanded, encompassing vineyards in Nemea and Mantinea.
Semeli was the mother of Dionysos, the Greek God of Wine. The ruins of the theatre of Dionysos is situated in the foothills of Mount Penteli. This was an important wine growing region, and the Semeli Estate, which began in these hills pays homage to their homeland by naming a line of their wines after Semeli.
It is a reminder that the Greeks have a lot to say about wine, given that their tradition with it goes back to ancient times.
The Semeli White is a blend of local varieties, Savatiano and Roditis. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, this is an expressive, dry white that boasts beautiful citrus and stone fruit notes on the nose and palate. A little hint of herbs keeps it multi-dimensional and delicious.
A great compliment to grilled whole fish, but also great as an apéritif.

2009 WEINGUT SPREITZER RIESLING “101”
Here is the perfect introductory course to a slightly off-dry Riesling from the Rheingau region of Germany.
Spreitzer is a rising star in the world of German wine. Brothers Andreas and Bernd Spreitzer leased the estate from their father in 1997. In recent years they have received heaps of praise from top German wine magazines being called the “discovery of the year” and one of the 100-best German vintners.
The focus of the winery is Riesling, accounting for over 90% of their production. They own some very fine vineyards including Lenchen in Oestrich and Jesuitengarten in Winkel.
This is their introductory wine, not dry and not really sweet, kind of in the middle. The wine has around 28 g/l of residual sugar, and true to the Spreitzer style the flavors are incredibly PURE! At 10% alcohol, this is such an easy drinker, especially on those hot days.
It is rare that I put anything off-dry in my samplers. Yet one goal I have for this sampler is to reintroduce wines to people that they had previously written off, whether it be from a negative experience or because they just don’t think it’s cool. I implore you to keep this wine in your sampler and not ask for me to take it out. Put it into context – take it to a restaurant with really spicy food. Simply enjoy it with food, because it is so versatile with so many types. I received a special deal on this wine, so get it while it lasts.
2009 ANABA “CORIOL,” SONOMA VALLEY WHITE WINE
You’ve tasted a dry, crisp white wine. You’ve tried a white with lower alcohol and a touch of residual sugar. Now it is time to try a rich, floral, aromatic white wine that oozes texture.
I’ve said it before, and will say it again -White Rhône varietals are perhaps the toughest in the world to produce. They can easily produce wines that are blowzy and overly-alcoholic.
When a producer, such as Anaba, has the deft touch to make an excellent example, they are fun to drink, complex, and really versatile with food.
“Coriol” is a blend of 49% Roussanne, 27% Viognier, 15% Grenache Blanc and 9% Marsanne. The fruit comes from three different vineyards in the Sonoma Valley.
Hand harvested fruit is pulled into the winery early in the morning to ensure cool juice. The fruit is sorted then whole cluster pressed and fermented – 1/3 goes into stainless steel and 2/3 into barrel. The lees are stirred frequetly. The wine is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, part of which are new.
Intense aromas of citrus peel, apricot, white flowers and white pepper. The body is rich and textured with good balancing acidity and nice length. Great with lots of grilled items like salmon, smoke roasted chicken, or grilled pork tenderloin.
You are getting an incredible deal on this wine – it normally retails for around $28 – and well worth it at that price. A change in distribution led to this great opportunity for me to include it in my sampler. Stock up while it lasts.
2008 DOMAINE SANTA DUC CÔTES DU RHÔNE “LES QUATRE TERRES”
As you can tell, I’m kind of a grilling fiend. Summertime (or any time for me) means hosting and going to lots of BBQ’s. I’m often doing this with a good bottle of Côtes du Rhône in hand.
One of my favorite producers of Côtes du Rhône is Domaine Santa Duc. Yves Gras, owner and winemaker at Santa Duc is most famous for his wines from the Gigondas appellation. His vines extend beyond that appellation, and it is from “Les Quatre Terres” or “The Four Lands” of Vacqueyras, Roaix, Séguret, and Rasteau that the grapes for this wine are sourced. Each of those lands bring something different to the equation, which allows Gras to blend and make the best wine possible. This Côtes du Rhône is a blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 5% of Carignan and Cinsault. It is fermented and aged on its lees in vats.
A terrific value! Hints of kirsch, strawberry, black pepper and smoke can be found on the nose. Medium-bodied with more spice, red berry notes and good length. Need a red for the 4th of July BBQ – here is your wine!
