Perman News 9/21/2016

Hello & Happy Wednesday,
We try not to interrupt your work week with wine related news, but today we have two very important announcements from Perman Wine.
We are excited to announce an upcoming wine dinner at Fat Rice with Francisca Van Zeller of Quinta Vale D. Maria. We recently have learned of her impending visit and have  a great event planned. Please read further below.
The second piece of news involves a big change to two of our monthly Friday Features. We are saying goodbye to the 6 for $70-Something and 6 for $120-Something samplers. We wanted to tell you about the new samplers, and why we are changing things.
Please email us with any questions.
Thanks for your continued business,
Craig, Jamie & Zach

Quinta Vale D. Maria wine dinner at Fat Rice

Wednesday, October 5th
7 PM
It’s not every day that you get a chance to sit down and have dinner with
Francisca Van Zeller from Quinta Vale D. Maria,
one of the iconic wine estates in the Douro Valley of Portugal.
On Wednesday October 5th at 7 PM,
Fat Rice has created a special menu to welcome Francisca,
and pair alongside her family’s fantastic wines.
A range of 7 wines (1 white, 5 reds and 1 Port) will be tasted,
with Francisca guiding us along the way.
We will taste the “everyday” wines called Rufo,
as well as the flagship red wine Quinta Vale D. Maria.
A special treat will be tasting the rare trio of single-vineyard red wines,
Curriculum Vitae, Vinha de Francisca and Vinho do Rio.
Just a few bottles of these wines are imported into Illinois each year.
These are wines that would normally be priced on a wine list for $200-$300 per bottle
We will finish with the estate Port from the incredible 2011 vintage.
Chef Abraham Conlon is pulling out all the stops,
preparing dishes that are special to this event and evening.
4 courses will be served family style at communal tastings
among a fun, convivial wine community.
This will be a small gathering, allowing Francisca to tell us about the history of the estate, and to give us an in depth journey into the making of what are some of the best wines produced in Portugal.
$150 per person, inclusive of tax and tip

Reservations can be made here.

Introducing our newest samplers:
6 for “Everyday”
Over the years, Perman Wine Selections has become known as a store that has championed the greatest wine values from around the world.
When we opened 9 years ago, we introduced a wine sampler called “6 for $60”. It had a really nice ring to it. It also got the message across. We wanted you to be able to stock your wine rack each month with great bottles around $10 per bottle.
As you, our customers know, eventually we had to increase the price. First to “6 for $60-Something”, then to “6 for $70-Something”.
The reality in today’s wine world is that the greatest wine values often come from places really far away. The costs of getting those wines here in refrigerated trucks and containers kept increasing. At the same time the price of quality wine increased.
A handful of years ago, we introduced a sampler called “6 for $120-Something”. It was a way to still give our customer great value, but at the same time expand the selections of wine from which we could choose. There will never be an Oregon Pinot Noir in the “6 for $70-Something” (a quality example doesn’t exist), but with the $120-Something, it was possible.
Both samplers allowed us to give our customers “everyday wines.” These are wines that you can open on a weeknight and not think twice about the price. They are wines you can gift to your neighbor after they water your plants for a week while you are away on vacation. They are really good bottles, that we personally, are proud to drink in our homes, and do so on a regular basis.
Its that concept of “everyday wines” that made it clear to us, that what we really were offering, and going forth what we should call these is our:
6 for “Everyday” Wine Club
There are two versions of this club.
6 for “Everyday” – The $15 and under Edition
(all wines $15 and under, will range from $80-$90 per month)
AND
6 for “Everyday” – The $30 and under Edition
(all wines $30 and under, will range from $120-$180 per month)
We all have different definitions of the price of an “everyday” wine, and these two clubs allow you to choose.
This is NOT an attempt to raise prices at our store, our margins are staying the same as they have been for the last 9 years. This has everything to do with making sure we give you THE best values from around the world.
We pay attention to what our competitors are up to.
We know that most wine clubs are simply smoke and mirrors. A lot of them work with wineries or companies to create their own personal wine labels. They do things like throw in “free shipping.” Let us tell you the truth, there is no such thing as free. Its built into the cost, and you pay for it by getting industrial plonk.
Our goal in these samplers is simple. We work with real people and real wineries that are making some of the best examples of wine in their respective regions and at an incredible price.
We feel that the 6 for Everyday Wine Club is simply the best value wine club you can buy. We hope you agree, and not just purchase it on a monthly basis for yourself, but that you tell all your friends about it.
Thank you for all your continued support!

Tastings Calendar

To all of our great customers:

I’m excited to announce our upcoming events calendar!

In year’s past I’ve hosted a series of more “formal, sit-down” tastings at the store.  I pick a theme, pour 8-10 wines, and spend the evening educating attendees.  These tastings, now called “Wine Wednesdays,” will continue throughout the year.  Reservations are required.

As I mentioned in last week’s Friday Feature – there is a new way to taste at Perman Wine Selections in 2013.  It’s called Routier!

What is Routier?

French for truck stop, Routier is a new concept in wine education.

Starting January 25th 2013, you can stop by Perman Wine Selections, between 5 & 8pm and taste a flight of three different wines, accompanied by a small bite of cheese. The cost is $25 per person (might change occasionally), no reservations needed.

Each Routier will be driven by a unique and sometimes curious theme that acts as a thread that ties together the flight.

Ever wonder what Muscadet, the Rhône and Beaujolais have in common? Have you found yourself pondering the significance rivers have upon viticulture? Routier attempts to illuminate these connections, in a fun and convivial way.

This is the perfect opportunity for dates, friends and small groups to enjoy a drink and learn something, no stuffy lecture, no prior commitment.

2013 is an exciting year for tastings at Perman Wine Selections, and so without further ado, I bring you the calendar of events.

====

Routier : Child You Were Born of Granite

From powerful, tooth-staining Syrahs to delicate Viogniers redolent of honeysuckle and peaches, the Northern Rhone Valley is home to a wide variety of great wines and a viticultural history that dates back to Roman times. Come explore this geological graben (grave), what granite soils bring to the party, and how the 69 climats of Cote Rotie can really tear you up inside.

Sicilian winemakers ride an exciting line between tradition and modernism and this is your opportunity to see what all the fuss is about. Bring your pumice stone!

$60 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

Where has all the sweet wine gone? German winemakers are moving away from making sweet wine and it got us to wondering here at Perman Wine Selections: is this a good idea, or just a way to compete with the rapidly changing whims of the international market? We also wish to explore the dramatic effect global warming has had upon German viticulture and talk about the future of red wine in the Bavarian hinterland.

Upcoming Tasting Schedule

Hello,
I’m excited to unveil my Events Schedule through the end of 2012.

I’ve got four exciting events left that you won’t want to miss!

If you have never been to a Perman Wine Selections tasting, they are a great way to educate yourself on the world of wine. Typically lasting a couple of hours, I pour 8-10 wines based on a specific topic, guiding you through what is being tasted. The tastings can be enjoyed by all levels of wine drinkers, from the newbie to the experienced connoisseur. Above all, the tastings are a lot of fun and we get to taste some amazing wines.

Please note, of these four tastings, the October 18th tasting should be signed up for online at https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=26380

France vs. The Rest of the World – Part 3
Thursday, October 18th
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Please sign up online at https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/home.asp?studioid=26380

One of my most popular tastings returns!

Ask a wine expert what where the greatest Pinot Noir in the world comes from and most will answer Burgundy. Ask who makes the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world, and one might argue that a grower in Sancerre does. France is home to some of the world’s greatest wines, but that hasn’t stopped the rest of the world from trying to make their own great world class wines. In many cases other countries and regions outside of France have outclassed their mentor.

This tongue-in-cheek tasting/competition will feature five flights of two wines each. One from a famed French appellation and the other, composed of the same varietal, just from a different part of the world.

France is 2-0, so let’s see if “The World” can finally take France down!

Piedmont Night / a.k.a. Barolo Night
Wednesday, November 7th
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
$70 per person
Contact Craig directly for reservations

You’ve heard the song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Well, I left my heart and liver in Piemonte! The famed Italian region located in Northwest Italy is home to some of the world’s greatest red wines. From Dolcetto and Barbera, to the king grape Nebbiolo, the diversity within the region and their ability to show terroir makes it a fascinating study.

Typically I’ve named this event “Barolo Night” in the past, as the focus of this tasting is always on Barolo. This year, I hope to give an extra nod to Dolcetto and Barbera, as these two grapes are more accessible to drink on a nightly basis. Don’t worry though, I’ll still be pouring at least 6 stupendous Baroli!

So come check out the latest and most exciting wines from Piedmont, including many of the newly released 2008 Baroli.

Champagne Fest 2012!
Thursday, December 6th and Friday, December 7th
7:00 PM – 9:30 PM
$95 per person
Contact Craig directly for reservations

If you love Champagne like I do, you will not want to miss the annual Champagne Fest at Perman Wine Selections!

Over two nights, 20 different Champagnes will be poured! As always, the focus of this year’s tasting is on Grower Champagne houses. Over the past two decades, the emergence of growers turned producers has allowed us to focus in more and more on the terroir of Champagne. I believe Champagne to be France’s most exciting, experimental, and changed appellation in that time period.

This is a “no holds barred” type of tasting. We won’t sit around and drink NV Champagne all night, we will definitely get into some serious, serious stuff!

I hesitate to refer to this as a taste – it is a Champagne Fest! Come ready to party!

Hello and Happy New Year!

I wanted to begin this New Year by thanking each and every one of you for being a great supporter.

This year brings lots of exciting changes in the way Perman Wine Selections does business.

First, I am excited to introduce Huge Galdones, who will be working with me on a part-time basis. Huge is a Food & Lifestyle photographer with a background in the food business going back to his Montreal roots. When not behind the camera, he will be helping Perman Wine Selections with marketing, operations, photography, social media and more.

This year also marks changes in the way you will be receiving information from Perman Wine Selections. While all of the details need to be finalized, you can expect to see a brand new website offering information on a wider array of wines. For those interested in the latest pre-arrival offers, the newest tasted and Perman-approved wines, this will be something you will want to check out on a regular basis.

For those that get their information from different social media applications, I will be also be using these platforms to offer more current and detailed information. Remember to “Like” my page on Facebook and follow @permanwine on Twitter.

Perman Wine Selections is a shop for all types of wine enthusiasts. Some of the highlights of include:

  • Budget friendly wines to fill your wine rack from both my monthly “Six for $60-Something” and “Six for $120-Something” wine samplers.

Events Calendar

Indigenous Italy
Thursday, January 26th
7:15 – 9:00 PM
$45 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

A strict 72-hour cancellation policy will be enforced – payment is due at sign-up

Italy is one of the world’s most exciting wine countries. The tremendous diversity of indigenous varietals grown fuels this excitement and while it makes it more confusing for the average wine consumer, it also makes it more rewarding and interesting.
Come taste 9 different varietals, many of which may be new to you and taste what I know – Italian wines offer the most diversity out of any wine country in the world!

=====

Tempranillo – Spain’s Most Famously Confusing Grape
Wednesday, February 8th
7:15 PM – 9:00 PM
$55 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

A strict 72-hour cancellation policy will be enforced – payment is due at sign-up

Tempranillo is one of the world’s most noble grape varieties. Yet when someone asks me for a good recommendation for one, I have to counter with a question – “in what shape or form?” Tempranillo may be most famous from appellations like Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but it grows all over the country. Within the aforementioned appellations it also varies based on location and producer style. This tasting will explore the wide world of Tempranillo – we will look for its thumbprint, show how producer style and their terroir affect how it smells and tastes.

=====

Save the date! – World-famous Barolo producer Franco Massolino is coming to town!
Monday, February 20th
Details to follow

If you love the wines of Piedmont and in particular the region of Barolo, then you will be excited to know that one of it’s greatest producers is coming to town. I am planning a small, intimate yet informal dinner with Franco Massolino. This will be a rare opportunity to sit down with Franco, taste some of his latest releases and enjoy a great meal.

This will be a magical evening!

=====

Evolution of Wine – Cellar Selections vs. Their Younger Brother
Friday, February 24th
7:15 PM – 9:00 PM
$75 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

A strict 72-hour cancellation policy will be enforced – payment is due at sign-up

Learning about wine includes understanding what happens to wine as it evolves in bottle. To demonstrate this evolution I thought it would be interesting if I paired, for example, a 2009 dry Riesling vs. a 2004 dry Riesling. The idea is to see how different grapes mature aromatically, flavor and texture wise. A total of 8 wines will be poured and both white and red wine will be featured.

=====

An Exploration of Bordeaux Varietals from Around the World
Thursday, March 8th
7:15 PM – 9:00 PM
$50 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

A strict 72-hour cancellation policy will be enforced – payment is due at sign-up

Every corner of the world grows Bordeaux varietals. Yet Cabernet Franc from Napa Valley tastes very different than if it came from the Loire Valley of France. Merlot from St. Emillion is a world apart than Washington State Merlot. Let’s sit down and taste 8-10 wines from all over the world and see how grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon differ according to their terroir. The focus is on red wines, but I can’t forget about White Bordeaux!

=====

3rd Annual What Happens When Red Burgundy Gets Old?
Wednesday, March 14th
7:15 PM – 9:00 PM
$90 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

A strict 72-hour cancellation policy will be enforced – payment is due at sign-up

The day before the real March Madness starts, I will be hosting a little Red Burgundy Madness at the store. For the 3rd year in a row, I will be highlighting bottles of Red Burgundy that have some bottle age on them. Wondering how a ’96 Nuits-St.-Georges from Henri Gouges is tasting? This is your rare opportunity to join in what is always a great event. Burgundy is truly magical when it has time in a cellar to unwind. This is my chance to show you why it is important to buy current releases and keep your hands of them so you can see what they are like at their 5th and 10th birthdays! No Pinot Noir fan should miss this!

=====

Friend of Mine – Friend of Ours Tasting
Thursday, March 29th
7:15 PM – 9:00 PM
$45 per person

14 spots available – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone

A strict 72-hour cancellation policy will be enforced – payment is due at sign-up

I channeled my inner Donnie Brasco to come up with this tasting, and you can come whether you are a made guy or not. This tasting is quite literal – focused on wineries that I’ve visited over the years and become great friends with. Visiting wineries helps you learn the tiny differences that make one winery different than the next.
I look forward to sharing my experiences with you – after this you will be a friend of ours!

If you have any questions about any of these tastings or want to rent out the space for a private tasting contact me today.
Cheers,

A year later, we are back at it – introducing Wine-os in the Woods 2: a Mediterranean Picnic. This year, we’re taking you on a culinary trip to the Mediterranean, with a 5-course, regionally inspired menu with wine pairings from Spain, Italy and France.
So come pull up a seat at the picnic table on Sunday, October 2nd from 1 pm till 4 pm. The price is $70 per person.

7:15 – 9:00 PM
$50 per person
2 spots left! – RSVP with Craig via e-mail or phone – a strict 48-hour cancellation policy will be enforced

Artists rent warehouse spaces. Emerging chefs look to low rent districts of the city to open their first venture. Those in the Mâconnais and Beaujolais regions of France are raising the bar for the great wines of Burgundy in a way that is not possible in more famous northern appellations like Puligny-Montrachet. We are going to explore the incredible Chardonnay’s of appellations like Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé. I will also highlight the greatest expressions of Gamay Noir from various Cru’s in Beaujolais. So come find out why “the Other Burgundy” is causing so much excitement in the wine world!

A Blind Leap of Faith
Wednesday, October 19th
7:15 – 9:15 PM
$50 per person
Sold Out – Get on the wait list

Blind tastings are a great way to leave your pre-conceived notions about wine checked at the door. When tasting blind one has a tendency to focus more on what makes a certain wine taste the way it does. On this night, I will pour both white and red wines from brown bags without revealing what they are. We will discuss what we taste and where it could possibly come from? The goal is not to find out who is the best blind taster, rather to learn how to be a better taster. I promise an array of world-class wines that will be delicious and fun to drink! So take a leap of faith and trust me that this will be a really fun and educational tasting.

France vs. The Rest Of The World – Part Deux!

It’s back! One of last year’s favorite tastings returns! France is home to the best examples of the noble varietals of the world, right? Let’s test that theory out by pouring 4 flights of wines, pitting one from France against the same varietal from another part of the world. Last year France edged out “the rest of the world” for wine supremacy. Let’s see who wins this year!

It wouldn’t be a winter tasting schedule without a Barolo tasting! Each year fans of the great Northwest Italian appellation flock to Perman Wine to taste the latest and greatest examples of the Nebbiolo varietal. This year I expect to once again have a sell-out crowd, as we focus on some of the fabulous 2007 vintage Barolo’s.

For good measure, I also will introduce those in attendance to some of the most exciting Dolcetto’s and Barbera’s in Piedmont! Fans of hearty Italian red wines won’t want to miss this!

Not only will you taste some of the best Champagne known to man, you also will learn a ton about the various varietals, areas and styles that are being produced in this diverse region.
