Friday Feature – The Champagne Value of the Year!

Hello and Happy Friday!

It is time for me to announce my Champagne value of the year!

Longtime fans and friends of Perman Wine Selections know that, each year, I select a Champagne that meets a strict criteria. I offer this to you as my “Champagne value of the year!”

I’m very proud of my track record, as I’ve offered some excellent Champagnes over the years from producers such as Larmandier-Bernier, Henriot, Marie-Noëlle Ledru and Pierre Brigandat.

That being said, this year may be my finest selection ever!  It is the perfect Champagne to have on hand for when you’re craving a glass of bubbles.   It also makes for a perfect gift to clients, co-workers and friends.

Working with smaller grower Champagne houses poses one major challenge.  Quantity.

This year’s Champagne value of the year is a small production and therefore it won’t be around forever.  Only 180 bottles came into Chicago this year, all of them through my doors.  No fan of Champagne will want to miss this!

Oh, and if you are a true Champagne aficionado, please inquire about the limited amounts of some of Vergnon’s other Champagnes.

Have a great weekend and Go Ducks!

NV J.L. Vergnon Champagne “Éloquence” Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs
During the holidays, no gift says celebration or thank you more than a bottle of Champagne.

Champagne is France’s most exciting wine region today.  We’ve moved beyond the pomp and into the circumstance of how the wine is produced and where it comes from.

Gone are the days where the négociants such as Moët & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot had a stranglehold on the Champagne market.

Champagne is made up of growers, and many of those growers are now producers.  With the great growers of Champagne you have everything: great terroir, attention to detail and all at great prices.

J.L. Vergnon is an emerging star in the Champagne region.  Based in the famed village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, it is in the heart of the Côte des Blancs subregion.

This is a tiny grower house, producing only 50,000 total bottles a year from just over 5 hectares of vineyards.  Winemaker Christophe Constant, who has been making wine for the Vergnon’s since 2002, is an exceptional talent.

His non-vintage Champagne called “Éloquence” is made entirely from Chardonnay from  the Grand Cru villages of Le Mesnil, Oger and Avize.  Constant changed the direction at Vergnon upon his arrival, eliminating chapitalization in favor of harvesting riper fruit, as well as eliminating malolactic fermentation.

The results can be seen in this beautiful Champagne. It jumps out of the glass with aromas of citrus and mineral. Exceptionally pure flavors of orange and lemon zest really last on the long, dry finish.

This is an exceptional value! I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate all of life’s great moments this holiday season!
