Events Calendar Update – May 11th, 2009

TWO AMAZING SPANISH EVENTS ARE COMING TO PERMAN WINE SELECTIONS…SO LISTEN UP AND DON’T FORGET TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY!

====
COME ON DOWN TO PERMAN WINE SELECTIONS FOR BASQUE NIGHT 2009!
====

On Friday night, May 29th, Perman Wine Selections will transform into the best Pinxtos bar in all of Chicago to introduce the new releases of Txakoli, Txakoli Rosé, and Basque Sidra from Ameztoi, Xarmant, and Isastegi!

WHAT’S A PINXTO?: A Pinxto is “finger food” usually no more than two bites in size from the Basque region of Spain.  X-Marx Chicago brings its “underground dining” to Perman Wine Selections for one night.  The talented chefs will create five different bites that are modern interpretations of the great Pinxtos that can be found in cities like San Sebastian, Bilbao and Tolosa in the Basque region.

WHAT’S TXAKOLI AND SIDRA?: A good question, but if you have been hanging out at Perman Wine Selections for a while you will know that each year tiny amounts of the traditional Basque white  wine called Txakoli (pronounced Cha-ko-lee, yell it in the shower next time, it’s fun to say!) are imported into Chicago. It is a high acid, un-oaked, white wine that works amazingly with lots of different Pinxtos.  They also make tiny quantities of pink Txakoli which is outrageously refreshing stuff!  Along with the new vintages of Txakoli and Txakoli Rosé, you will be the first to try the new vintage of the other great Basque tradition, Sidra! Sidra is fermented apple cider that is also incredibly high acid, smoky, earthy and downright addictive!

SO WHAT’S THE DEAL?: On an average Friday night in Spain, and in particular in the Basque region, a group of friends will get together and visit several Pintxos bars in their area.  A couple small bites are ordered along with a small splash of Txakoli,Sidra, or wine.  The idea is to go to a few places in a night, enjoying the specialty of the bar and move on.

I strongly believe in upholding the traditions of a region.  To celebrate the new releases of my beloved Txakoli, Txakoli Rosé, and Basque Sidra, I have tried to create a unique event to uphold this tradition.

The X-Marx team is going to create five complementary Pintxos to pair with the five different wines of the evening.  Upon entering Perman Wine you will grab a traditional tumbler as your drinking vessel and a punch card.  You will be able to try five different Pintxos along with their complimentary Txakoli or Sidra.

Once you have completed your tour of the Basque region I encourage you to move to another spot in the neighborhood.  Kind of like bar hopping except you get to try tasty food along with your adult beverages.

Other recommended sources for hopping include the stand up tables in the center of The Publican. The bar at Province for a small plate.  Or maybe finish with several small plates and a bottle of wine at Avec.  All are great spots right here in the West Loop!

HOW MUCH?: $25 per person, payable by cash at the door, but you must reserve a spot!

TIME?: Stop in any time between 5:30 PM and 9 PM. It will take approximately 30 minutes to try all the drinks and food.

RESERVATIONS?: You bet! Only 60 Basque loving, hungry for Pintxos fans will be able to take advantage of this party.  To confirm your attendance e-mail me today!

PORON?: Um…of course!  Yes even the famous Poron will make an appearance at the event.  Think Basque style beer bong….

HONESTLY…
I couldn’t be more excited about this event.  Great Basque style food, delicious Basque wine and cider, this is going to be a great start to your Friday night!

EVEN MORE INCENTIVE: Txakoli and Sidra are extremely rare to see in the United States, let alone any where else in the world.  Attendees at this event will have the first opportunity to purchase these new arrivals, and even better, special prices on the wine and cider will be available to those that attend….what are you waiting for!!!

=====
SPECIAL WINEMAKER TASTING WITH ALBERT JANÉ OF ACÚSTIC CELLER
=====

TO BE BLUNT: If you’re a Spanish red wine fan and haven’t discovered the region of Montsant, then you will not want to miss this tasting.  Not only is Albert one of the regions best winemakers, but he is one of the top young winemakers in Spain today.

WHEN AND WHERE: Tuesday, June 2nd @ Perman Wine Selctions

TIME: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

COST: $40 per person

WHAT’S INCLUDED?: Albert will pour a four vintage vertical (2004-2007) of his two wines.  You will be the only people in the United States to have ever tasted these vintages side by side.  The ‘04’s were never released in the United States and 2007 has not been released yet.  I will also provide delicious cheese from Pastoral for nibbling alongside.

HISTORY OF ACÚSTIC CELLER: Albert grew up in a wine family and eventually in partnership with his brother Gerard took over the cellars at his family’s estate in Penedès called Jané Ventura. Albert followed his dream to break out on his own and purchased a beautiful, old vineyard in the Montsant growing region of Spain.  With its Roman origins, Montsant is climatically suited to growing Rhône varietals.  The vineyard Albert purchased was chock full of old vine Garnacha (Grenache) and Samsó (Carignan), enough to allow him to make a wine shortly after he purchased the vineyard.

His first wine was made in the cellars of a good friend Josep María from Bodegas Vendrell Rived. Since then he is making his wines in an old cellar in the village of Els Guiamets.  Two wines (for now, more on the way!) are made by Albert at Acústic Celler, one simply called Acústic and the other Braó.

Albert has been successful right from the get go with his wines.  Both The Wine Advocate and International Wine Cellar have highly rated these wines from their first introduction into America.  Most importantly Acústic has been on the shelf here at Perman Wine Selections ever since my doors first opened.

GRAND FINALE: This is a really special tasting.  Only fourteen seats at the table to learn about an emerging superstar and taste his delicious, rich, and complex wines.  On a personal level I am excited to see the evolution of the wines, it is not something that even a “professional” such as myself gets to do very often. Finally, Albert is also one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and this will above all be a really fun time! Mark your spot today!
