Loire Valley

Domaine des Champs Fleuris is the labor of love of four friends who decided to commit their lives and financial resources to 44 hectares of vines, with majority plantings of Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. They are located in a tiny village called Tourquant, and to get there you need to cross a rather spindly bridge that, despite its wobbliness, affords a spectacular view of the Loire River.

The winery is small with an adjoining modern tasting room. It was in this tasting room that we fell in love with this producer and the work they are doing at Champs Fleuris.

In the vineyards there is great sun exposure and the vines sit on the classic soils of the region called tuffeau, a porous, sedimentary rock that is prevalent in the Loire Valley. Given the stoney vineyard sites, many of their wines show an attractive mineral quality.

The Loire Valley is known for its crisp Sauvignon Blanc and earthy Cabernet Franc, but it also produces over two million gallons of Champagne Method sparkling wine under the appellation “Crémant de Loire”. Most of this Crémant production comes out of the Saumur appellation, which is where Domaine des Champs Fleuris is located.

Champs Fleuris makes their fines bulles (aka bubbles) at the estate which is a relatively rare practice in the region. They also produce light, crisp whites from Chenin Blanc and age-worthy reds from Cabernet Franc.
