Quinta
da
Serradinha

When it comes to the world we live in, there are people that set trends and people that follow them. In our journey through Portugal to discover the best of small family estates, we were introduced to a young winemaker named António Marques da Cruz. His family's winery is located near the town of Leiria, in the northern part of the appellation of Lisboa.

Near where Leiria stands today, the village of Collippo was important to the Romans during their time in Portugal. It was likely then that vineyards were introduced to the limestone soils of the Serra d'Aire hills. They benefit from the cooling influence of the Atlantic, and provide a great base for production of high quality white and red wine. Later, the occupation of the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula and the arrival of Phylloxera brought devastation to the vineyards of the region.

In the middle of the 20th Century, the Marques da Cruz family began to commercialize wine in the region. Recognizing the historic wine growing importance of the region, the family resurrected the vineyards, and way before anyone else in the region began producing wine in the most organic and sustainable way. Today António Marques da Cruz is still one of the leaders in not just the region, but Portugal as a whole when it comes to producing wine as naturally as possible in both the vineyards and the winery.

Quinta da Serradinha is a very small production winery, with on average 15,000 bottles of production per year. They make a red, a fantastic, low-alcohol, earth-driven wine. As well as two fantastic white wines, made in very small quantities. Occasionally we get lucky and are also able to get small amounts of António’s remarkable rosé.
