Vinho Verde

One of the more fascinating aspects of Portuguese wine is how varied and different each region’s climate and terroir is. And while wines are being produced in warm, Mediterranean climates like the Douro, Portugal’s Vinho Verde region in the north is a much cooler area, and has a continental climate influenced greatly by the Altlantic Ocean to its west.

Vinho Verde is Portugal’s largest region and is broken down into 9 sub-regions. White grape varieties tend to dominate here, and although this region is internationally famous for a light, spritzy wines made from Alvarinho, other styles of wine are also available.

Quinta do Ameal is located in the sub-region of Lima, and specializes in an indigenous white variety called Loureiro. Their wines are made entirely from Loureiro grown on the granite soils of the Ponte de Lima sub-region. Loureiro is in possession of very fine acidity and has lovely, floral aromatics including acacia blossom, orange and of course, the laurel bay leaves for which it was named. This wine is as crisp and refreshing as one could ever want.

For several years, Perman Wine Selections has been championing the magnificent work that Pedro Araujo, owner of Quinta do Ameal, has been doing with the Loureiro grape. We introduced this wine to many of our customers and many across the country. Pedro’ dedication to his historic property, which dates back to 1710, and to Loureiro, is infectious when you hear him talk and explain the wines. It all revolves around the belief that Loureiro is a noble variety, that has beauty and freshness in its youth, but can also develop, put on weight, and increase in complexity like a great dry Riesling.

While I am not a believer in the usage of press or scores as a singular sales tool, I do want to mention that the 2015 vintage of Ameal was recently highlighted in Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, by Mark Squires who covers the Portuguese wine world. In it, the 2015 vintage of Ameal was given 94 Points, one of the best reviewed wines in the entire article. This is a big deal for Quinta do Ameal. It signifies that the work they are doing to show the other face of Vinho Verde has been validated.
