Adega Regional De Colares "Chão Rijo" Tinto '14

Colares is one of the most unique "terroirs" in the wine world, gaining a slightly cultish status amount wine geeks. It is one of the smallest regions in Portugal, situated on the Atlantic coast. The most important producer of the region is the Adega Regional de Colares, which is a cooperative that was set up to help save the region itself.

Due to the scarcity of vines in the region, finding value wine from Colares is an impossibility. Yet the Adega Regional de Colares does make an excellent value wine from vineyards surrounding Colares. While Colares is planted in sandy soils and its red made from the grape Ramisco, the value wine "Chão Rijo" comes from heavier clay soils, and is made from a blend of 80% Castelão and 20% Tinto Roriz.

The similarities between this wine and the Colares Tinto are based on climate, and the fact that they are distinctly Atlantic-influenced red wines. "Chão Rijo" is a fresh, light-bodied red, with red fruit tones, and distinct earth tones.

Pair this with the classic dish of Portugal, Feijoada.
