Alain Chavy Bourgogne Blanc '17

Alain Chavy Bourgogne Blanc '17

It is not often that a wine from Burgundy is able to make its way into our wine club, so we could not have been more thrilled when the opportunity presented itself!

Chavy is a very famous name in Puligny-Montrachet. Puligny-Montrachet holds not only some of the most coveted vineyard sites in all of Burgundy, but of the world. However, only a small number of the wines bearing the name of the appellation are actually made by vignerons based in the village. And for centuries, producers throughout Burgundy had enabled those who own plantings to auction their sites, befit to the highest bidder. Despite this temptation, several families have held onto their land and established their own domaines, Alain Chavy being one of the few.

The Chavy family has had roots in Puligny for almost 200 years. In 1976, after years of selling grapes to negociants, they began to bottle wines under their own label. After a family dispute in 2003, the original family domaine dissolved and the property was split between two family members, Jean-Louis and Alain Chavy.

This wine is mainly made from the young vines of Alain's estate in Puligny-Montrachet and has all of the character that you would associate from Puligny but at more than half the price. This wine comes from truly one of the best, and one of the greatest underdogs of Puligny-Montrachet.

One could describe Alain Chavy's style as one with restraint, not allowing the fruit to overdevelop, matched with racy acidity. All of his wines are barrel fermented and aged, with minimal new oak and limited batonnage to keep the wines rich and balanced, but not over-the-top. Expect fresh, ripe tones of orchard and citrus fruit, with creamy edges full of vanilla.
