André et Michel Quenard Mondeuse Chignin '15

André et Michel Quenard Mondeuse Chignin '15

The hills of Torméry have long been known as a pass through the Alps between France and Italy. As a result, there have been vines planted in the area since Roman times. The hills and surrounding region were award SOC status in 1973, and are now home to one of the best appellations in the Savoie - Chignin-Bergeron. Andre Quenard started accruing vineyards in the area in 1944 (at just ten years old), eventually bottling his production in 1960. Michel joined his father in 1976, and the estate continued to grow. Guillaume is the third generation in the family to work with their wines. They farm their high elevation vineyards (300-400 meters) with respect for nature as their driving principal.

Mondeuse is one of the region's best known varietals.  These are some of the oldest vines from the Quenard winery, at about 70 years old.  This wine sees partial whole cluster fermentation, plus aging in large foudre for a year.  End result is bright, crunchy red berries like raspberries which remind us of Gamay, alongside its violet floral aromatics, which remind us of Syrah.  Bright on top, with depth below, a lot having to do with its higher elevation site as a big contributor to its structure; a great compromise that's extremely pleasing and palatable.
