Luigi Scavino Azelia Dolcetto d'Alba "Bricco dell'Oriolo" '17

Luigi Scavino Azelia Dolcetto d'Alba "Bricco dell'Oriolo" '17

Last month we featured a selection from Paolo Scavino. This month, we are featuring Enrico Scavino's cousin, Luigi Scavino! Clearly, talent in winemaking is genetic for the Scavino's. To this day, Azelia remains a Barolo lover’s secret – though the estate somehow continues to fly under the radar, they have built their reputation around beautiful wines of uncompromising quality. And where there is great Barolo, there is great Dolcetto, amongst other star varietals of the region!

This is a single vineyard Dolcetto, in Montelupo Albese. For proprietor Luigi Scavino, the Bricco dell’Oriolo represents a maternal bond. His mother owned a small vineyard in front of the church of the Madonna dell’Oriolo. Facing due south at 600 meters above sea level, it was the kind of real estate generally reserved for Nebbiolo. Luigi’s father Lorenzo owned vines nearby, also at 600 meters. By blending the two sites, Scavino pays homage to his family tree while crafting a stunning Dolcetto from 60+ year old vines.

The Dolcetto was fermented and aged in tank to preserve its freshness. The wine boasts both red, black and blue fruit with classic Piedmontese floral tones of rose, that dances around sweet spice notes. This wine will thrive as your go-to table wine, as it will pair so well with various dishes and ingredients - mushrooms, butternut squash, truffles, ragu, stews...the options are endless!
