Balthasar Ress Rüdesheim Berg Rottland Riesling "GG" '14

Balthasar Ress is one of the top producers in the Rheingau region of Germany. The Rheingau is practically a strip of southeast-facing vineyard sites along the Rhine River, which assists in providing warmth. With that in mind, you see some of the richest Riesling, braced with a backbone of acidity and dry in style. In Rüdesheim, the slopes are steep, really allowing the sun to embrace the vineyards and provide additional ripeness.

Balthasar Ress has history in the hospitality business first and foremost, but in 1870, they started bottling wine for one of their hotels, and that's when things took off. In 1950, they procured a wine estate in Rüdesheim and with it, parcels in today's Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland.

This "Berg Rottland" bottling is classified as a "Grosses Gewächs," under the top-notch VDP organization, which is used to identify some of the finest white wines of Germany, specifically dry wines. The designation is not an official part of German wine law, but was conceived by a group of top producers in the early 2000s and refined as recently as 2012 as part of a plan to identify the best vineyard sites. It is also "trocken," mostly devoid of residual sugar.

The vines grown in Berg Rottland, have pushed through quite stony soils, full of quartz, classic red slate and gravel. Mineral presence is without a doubt, with smoke-tinged notes alongside ripe stone and citrus fruit, honeyed notes, with a mouthwatering finish that'll push you into your next sip.
