Benanti Etna Rosso '16

Benanti Etna Rosso '16

Benanti has been a crucial part in the integrity, preservation and overall traction that Mt. Etna in Sicily has produced.  When Dr. Giuseppe Benanti started making wine from his family’s winery and estate vineyards in the late 1980s, there were less than 10 producers in Etna. His goal was to channel the authenticity of Etna, through indigenous varietals. The Etna DOC is on top of a live volcano, encompassing almost all of the slopes from north, to south to east-facing exposures, each showcasing a different angle of terroir, something that was integral to Benanti's early work in the DOC.  Not only is Benanti vital behind the success of Mt. Etna wines, a founding father if you will, but has also given attention to parts of the mountain that were once inhabited for winemaking, such as the northern slopes, creating much more elegant expressions, braced with acidity and terroir.

The Benanti estate is located in the southern part of Etna. They produce wine from their estate vineyards as well as work closely with growers in the north and east on Mt. Etna. Today, Giuseppe’s sons Antonio and Salvino are committed to the winery.

The Etna Rosso is 85% Nerello Mascalese and 15% Nerello Cappuccio.   The fruit is sourced from a selection of grapes from vineyards located on the northern, south-eastern and south-western slopes of Mount Etna, majority of areas with minimal sun exposure, contributing to its elegant style. Vines are anywhere from 10-60 years old.  After fermentation in steel tanks, about 80% of the wine then matures in stainless steel tanks while about 20% matures in used French oak barriques for 8-10 months.

This is a wine with a leaner feel texturally, but with deep minerality and fruit, truly showcasing what Etna has to offer, also fresh and approachable to consume today, tomorrow, or any day.
