Botijo Rojo Garnacha Tinta '15

Botijo Rojo Garnacha Tinta '15

Whether its the Southern Rhône Valley or in this case Northeast Spain, Grenache is the grape in many of the best wine values in the world. So much so that if I wanted to have half of the wine club filled every month with Grenache, I could easily find great candidates.

This month we feature a Garnacha from a region that we have never highlighted before. Valdejalón is located in Northeast Spain,  on the borders of more well-known appellations Calatayud and Campo de Borja. There are only three producers in Valdejalón, two cooperatives, and this wine made from two wine enthusiasts, Fernando Mora and Mario López.

Mario comes from a family of grape growers, previously they had sold the fruit from their "Las Cellas" vineyard to those aforementioned cooperatives. Along with Fernando, they are now producing their own wine, Botijo Rojo, essentially out of a garage.

35-45 year-old Grenache vines are handpicked, with primary fermentation in stainless steel and malolactic in old concrete vessels. The wine is aged for seven months in mainly concrete tanks, with a small portion in old oak.

This full-bodied red has pretty aromas and flavors of red berries, licorice and spice. It doesn't feel over-ripe like many Garnacha from the region. Pour yourself a glass after a long day of work, or pair with roasted leg of lamb.
