Brusset "Laurent B." Côtes du Rhône '16

Rhône Valley

Brusset "Laurent B." Côtes du Rhône '16

On my first wine trip to France in 2000, we had the pleasure of meeting with Laurent Brusset of Domaine Brusset. As one of the leading estates in the appellation of Cairanne, Brusset owns 70 hectares in total, spread across their home village but also including the nearby appellations of Gigondas, Rasteau, and Ventoux.

While most of the range from Brusset are wines that need bottle age, as they are massive in their youth, this humble Côtes de Rhône is one you should be buying for everyday consumption. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre, low-yielding fruit that is handpicked, destemmed and fermented in tank. It is aged in vats for six month before release.

Beautiful spice driven aromatics with notes of strawberry, cherry and cracked pepper. On the palate this really balances the spice and power of the Rhône varieties, with an elegance and freshness that keeps you coming back or another glass. This is, and always has been one of the best Côtes du Rhône values around. Worth buying by the case, because while delicious now, it will develop over the next 3 or 4 years.
