Calabretta Cirò Rosso Superiore Classico 2014

Calabretta Cirò Rosso Superiore Classico 2014

Cataldo Calabretta is the fourth generation of viticulturists in his family. Along with his sisters Maria and Michela, he established an estate, and in 2012 released their first vintage of Cirò Rosso Classico. Cirò Rosso is an ancient style, dating back to the Greeks and the Byzantines. Made from a local Calabrian grape known as Gaglioppo, which Calabretta farms organically at 50 meters above sea level. Cirò is one of a number of regional Italian wines that have been around since antiquity. Producers like Calabretta are preserving that history, and their cultural heritage by focusing on this indigenous style, instead of planting international varieties or using technological tricks in the cellar. Fermentations happen spontaneously, and the wines mature in glazed concrete tanks before bottling. On their site, the winery suggests pairing this with "flavourful baby goat cooked in the oven," which sounds fantastic - we'd highly recommend a trip to Birreria Zaragoza to test such a pairing out. You could just as easily enjoy this generous, floral, red-fruited wine with a juicy burger or steak.stjeanbarroux
