Casa Castillo "El Molar" Tinto '16

Casa Castillo "El Molar" Tinto '16

Casa Castillo is one of Spain's great wineries. Owned and operated by José Maria Vicente, this 3rd generation producer is most famous for his work with the grape Monastrell.

Jumilla enjoys a hot and very dry climate, but its combination of elevation, dramatic drop in nighttime temperatures, and limestone subsoil allow it to produce full-bodied reds, with notable balance.

"El Molar" is a unique and special wine from Casa Castillo. A decade ago, José Maria planted Grenache in a vineyard with lots of gravel soil. 2011 marked the first vintage of "El Molar," and it has quickly become one of Spain's most unique examples of the varietal.

The wine is fermented using whole clusters, with natural yeast, and aging in neutral 500L oak barrels.

The 2016 "El Molar" is a beautiful wine, with dark cherry, raspberry, flowers and herbs. This is a full-bodied wine with nice richness and some tannins on the finish. Pair this with a roasted leg of lamb.
