Casa de Saima, Colheita Tinto '15

Casa de Saima, Colheita Tinto '15

This is a small, family-run winery, founded in 1940 with 18 hectares of vineyards located on small plots of land. Winemaker Graça Miranda of Casa de Saima runs the winery in the town of Sangalhos in Bairrada and is dedicated to showcasing the potential of these indigenous grapes, that can be difficult to grow, but produce amazing wines.

This Atlantic-influenced region grows the finicky Baga grape to produce their red wines. Baga, a speciality to the coastal Bairrada region and once nearly extinct, was taken on in efforts from a group of diligent producers who tirelessly begun to reclaim older vineyards and promote the variety, despite a lack of local interest in it. A lot like Nebbiolo, wines made with Baga can range from serious and age worthy (like their Grande Reserva) to fresh, bright and perfect for every day drinking.

This is the "Colheita Tinto," which is 60% Baga blended with 30% Merlot and 10% Touriga Nacional. The grapes, once harvested, are then foot trodden in traditional stone lagar, and then the wine ages in old oak vats. This is Casa de Saima's point of entry into their red selections; a great place to jump in! The fruit is bold and full of spiced plum and black cherry, with the Atlantic influencing herbal tones and lingering acidity. The wine has an initial tannic presence that resides into a soft finish. A fun option for any Bordeaux fan.
