Casa de Saima Espumante Bruto '16

Casa de Saima Espumante Bruto '16

Bairrada is a region in western Portugal, not far from the Atlantic, north of Lisbon and south of Douro. The mix of limestone-clay and sandy soils, along with the cooling effects of the Atlantic make the region perfect for wines ranging from the local red Baga, to sparkling wines, and everywhere in between. The region was the first in Portugal to produce Champagne method sparkling wines in 1890. Graça Maria da Silva Miranda is the current head of her family estate, founded in 1940. In a region where the average holding (split between 4700 registered growers) is just shy of half an acre, Casa de Saima has a whopping forty-four and a half! The vineyards are predominantly planted to native varieties, Baga, Bical, Maria Gomes, and more.

We work with several wines from this estate, and they are all special, but this sparkling wine stands out as a particularly exceptional value. I drank a bottle with friends for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, and that's exactly what this wine is for. Crisp and dry, with savory, almost salty, mineral notes, it's balanced with pleasant yellow fruits, making for a charming, easy-drinking wine. It's the perfect bottle to have on hand for get-togethers, both impromptu and formal.

Casa de Saima is a small, family-run winery in Bairrada. They are very passionate about their tiny region, which is well-known for producing excellent sparkling and red wines, yet their white wines are equally as impressive.
