Catherine Marshall is well recognized as one of South Africa’s top winemakers.

She was way ahead of her time, starting to produce wine in 1997, one of the first garage wineries in a wine scene that mainly was dominated by the national cooperative and the established Stellenbosch estates.

In 2007, Cathy purchased land in the Elgin region of South Africa. An area that was previously more noted for its apple and pear trees, it is now the pre-eminent cool climate wine producing region in the Western Cape. Cathy along with Richard Kershaw have given the wine consumers the evidence of its potential greatness.

Cathy produces three different Pinot Noir in her range. This cuvée called “Sandstone Soils” is made from Pinot grown in three cool sites in Elgin. Soil types for this label includes,Table Mountain Sandstone, Bokkeveld Shale with Silica Quartzand Tukulu (combination of sand and gravel).

The Pinot was de-stemmed and partially crushed before overnight maceration in stainless steel tanks. The juice and skin are punched down, with tannin and flavor extraction carefully monitored. The grapes are pressed in a basket press, with malolactic fermentation occurring in 225 liter oak casks. The wine is racked into new, second, third and fourth use Burgundy barrels for aging between 9 and 12 months.

A vibrant but incredibly lightly colored Pinot Noir, this wine jumps from the glass with fresh strawberry and creamed raspberry notes. There is surprising richness in the mouth, with more red fruit, light herbal notes, and a clean and balanced finish. Pair this with grilled salmon or roasted chicken.
