Celler Pardas "Sus Scrofa" Sumoll '16

As the commercial demand for cheap sparkling wine or commercially styled, full-bodied, reds made from international grape varieties came to dominate the viticultural landscape of Cataluña and the Penedes in the last half of the twentieth centuries, many of the traditional, native grape varieties of the region began to disappear. Until recently, this has been the fate of Summoll - an underdog variety that can be a pain in the ass in the vineyards, and produces light, low-alcohol, pretty, subtle wines that have not been particularly fashionable to the Spanish wine marketing council and the international press.

Celler Pardas, one of favorites in Spain, are doing their part to preserve Summoll (pronounced "sue-moy") by making three different wines from the grape - a rosé, the more ambitiously styled Collita Roja, and Sus Scrofa. The latin term for the wild boar that adorns the label, Sus Scrofa is a "Sumoll for the masses," delicious, easy drinking, and affordable.

True to the nature of the grape, and the local culture of easy-drinking wines, this is refreshing at 12.5% alcohol, with juicy red fruit, just a hint at rusticity, and soft tannins. It's a wine that reminds one of warm, sunny days, whose bright flavors can cut through the winter chill. Perfect with a bit of a chill on it, you can open it while you're cooking dinner, but I'm pretty confident you'll finish the bottle before it's time to eat - without even trying.

Celler Pardas is located in the Alt Penedès region of Catalunya, an area well known for being the heart of Cava country (Spain's sparkling wine). They have chosen, however, not to make sparkling wine, rather they focus on still wines produced from local varieties.
