Château de la Selve "Beaulieu" Vin de Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardèche '16

To the west of the Rhône Valley, is Coteaux de l'Ardèche - a Vin de Pays appellation, where the hills are rugged and the growing seasons are long and hot.  The soil diversity here, however, is quite varied with limestone, chalky clay and sand, with naturally low-yielding vines.  In aid to moderate the heat, the Ardèche River runs through the hills.  Rhône varietals dominate the vineyards.  However, Château de la Selve has experimented with growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, successfully.   Château de la Selve is a small team, creating organic and biodynamically farmed and vinified wines.  In the "Beaulieu", we see Cabernet Sauvignon blended with some Grenache and Cinsault aged in both amphora and oak (50-50).  The wine resulted in exaggerated mineral tones, with a brooding palate of bold dark fruit that is neither fresh nor over the top as far as ripeness is concerned. The amphora works to keep the tannins softer, as well as allowing such nuances of garrigue notes to linger throughout. This is a beautiful glimpse into the potential of the Ardèche.
