Château du Cayrou, Cahors '14

Château du Cayrou, Cahors '14

Cahors is located just south of Bordeaux, and has become one of the most celebrated regions for cultivating Malbec, also known as Côt. Cahors has seen a significant shift in quality and recognition over the past 10 years, making wines from Château du Cayrou worthwhile to note.

Château du Cayrou is a leading example of this shift in change. When estate owner George Douin brought in his son in law, Julien Goursaud, to take care of the estate, Julien saw so much potential - but this meant cutting the production hectarage in half.

For Julien, it's all about the soil - he came to the conclusion that some of the parcels are simply not gravelly enough to make top level wine, so he cultivates 15 of the original 30 hectares where the terroir is best. This also meant getting back to the basics - Julien decided to cut all the Merlot out of the blend going with 100% Côt, since the 2014 vintage.

Julien has since converted the winery to certified organic practices, and everything really seemed to work out for the best, enabling the winery to truly show off the terroir of Cahors and how special it is for Côt. Côt can truly be an elegant wine, with a light frame and complete transparency of place, as seen with Cayrou. To achieve such finesse, this means there is no oak to be found here!

Bright red fruits, pepper, and roasted coffee on the nose. On the palate it is lively, fresh, and a little spicy, with balanced acidity and a long finish, making it compellingly easy to drink.
