Claudio Cipressi "Tintilia del Molise Machiarossa" '14

Claudio Cipressi "Tintilia del Molise Machiarossa" '14

Molise is often referred to as the "black sheep" region of Italy. The area lacks tourism and is riddled with poverty in this highly rural region. Although overlooked a great deal, winemakers like Claudio Cipressi reminds us of Molise's potential, when in the right hands. The area is captivating and beautiful, practically untouched and left alone due to its lack of modernization and distance from any major city.

Cipressi focuses on native varietals, including the almost-extinct Tintilia. A once-popular varietal, Tintilia has seen a decline due to its low-yielding character. For Cipressi, it's part of a perfect formula, where his vineyards are farmed organically, focusing on capturing concentration and terroir. In fact, due to the hot climate here and the varietal's intense qualities, his top cuvée, "Macchiarosso," is vinified in tank to preserve its natural intensity. The wine is inky and opulent, with rich dark fruit, tobacco and spice.
