Clos du Caillou's personal history is inherently a part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's. Clos du Caillou was originally founded in 1895. Although built with a cellar on site, it's original focus was as a hunting preserve, which ironically led to its exclusion from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, upon its creation in the 1930’s. When the government experts arrived at the Clos in 1936 to survey the land for the upcoming appellation, they were not welcomed and instead were met with armed caretakers. This is the reason for a certain blank spot in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape map to this very day.

It wasn't until 1955, under the Pouizin family, that the realized potential of the land was taken seriously, and forests were cleared to make way for more vineyards, and eventually estate bottling by the 1970s. The winery has since progressed further with becoming certified organic in 2010, although they have been working organically since the 2000 vintage. And more recently, biodynamic practices have been incorporated.

Clos du Caillou presents bottles full of spectacular terroir, the very same that makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape so distinctive and special. While majority of the wines are classified as simply Côtes-du-Rhône, the wines are anything but, showing modest complexity and depth, truly adding to the incredible value of wines like this.

The cuvée's name, "Le Bouquet des Garrigues," permeates on the nose and palate with the exact descriptor its name beholds. The blend is 85% Grenache - 10% Syrah - 5% Carignan and Mourvèdre, grown in sandy soils filled with red clay and classic pebbly stones.

After harvest, 90% of the grapes are destemmed (10% whole cluster) and vinified separately in concrete tanks with its native yeasts. Afterward, it is aged for 14 months in foudres. Alongside hints of garrigues are deep, ripe fruit tones of dark wild berries; spiced, peppery tones and star anise are present, too. The wines flavors are dense and broad, but maintains a lifted palate and moderate structure held together by fine, round tannins.
