Cosse et Maisonneuve Cahors "Le Combal" '18

Cosse et Maisonneuve Cahors "Le Combal" '18

Here is a wine for date night: Matthieu Cosse and Catherine Maisonneuve have fifteen hectares of vineyard near Cahors, which they farm biodynamically. The grape for Cahors is Malbec (known here as Cot) and it traditionally gives a very deeply colored, plush and powerful red. Matthieu and Catherine's wines have all these qualities, but also a distinctive elegance thanks to lovely fresh acidity which cuts through the traditional richness the region is known for. I find this wine truly enjoyable in an uncomplicated, if a bit hedonistic way. Crowd pleaser? Sure, but also lovely for the most discerning among us!

Produced on the best part of a 10 ha plot in the town of Mauroux, Le Combal, while staying quaffable thanks to the gravelly clay, has a solid backbone that makes the wine feel silky on the palate. Twelve months of aging in barrels helps with the silken texture, but never overpowers. For a brief moment, you might wonder if you are drinking Burgundy! The 2018 (excellent vintage with superb aging potential) was bottled earlier for the American market: it requires rapid decanting to be appreciated at its fair value as it may have a little CO2 left.

The nose is all violets and roses with sultry cacao moments. The palate is more fruit driven, tasting of pomegranate and plum jam with soft tannin and a mineral core. Serve it with a luxe steak tartare or something else rich in iron. It is still a baby from a superb vintage that can be appreciated over the next few years. A very good value with a little romance to boot.
