Costers del Priorat "Blanc de Pissarres" '16

Costers del Priorat "Blanc de Pissarres" '16

While primarily known for their red wine production, Costers del Priorat's white wines can be surprising and exotic to note. Unlike past examples of Priorat wines being big and heavily extracted, that once defined the region, wineries like Costers del Priorat work towards elegance and terroir driven wines. The winery holds several parcels of vines coming from a few different villages, offering a variety of mineral-rich soils, plus an advantage to fresh, unique aromas due to their Mediterranean disposition.

To really allow this beautiful region to be captured, Costers del Priorat utilizes both organic and biodynamic practices. They also work with the use of larger, neutral vessels for vinification, such as concrete, amphora, demi-muids and foudre to unlock and enable the complex flavors and minerality to really express itself.

The "Blanc de Pissarres" is composed of old-vine Garnatxa Blanca, Macabeu and Pedro Ximenez. Pissarres translates to "slate" - hinting at the famous Licorella soils found in Priorat. After 10 days of skin contact and fermentation in tank, the wine ages in large, old foudre. The nose shows the marked personality of the Priorat’s White Grenache, with notes of white flowers, herbs and stone fruit skin. The palate is filled with with citrus and smoky flavors.Through the warm and charming footprint of Pedro Ximenez, a surprising hint of sweetness find itself on the palate as well, in an interesting balance with such freshness and genuine minerality.
