Rioja is undoubtedly Spain’s most important wine region. Historically, Spain has been provincial in their consumption of wine, preferring to drink the wine produced from their own region. There is one exception. Rioja, can be and has been the one wine that can be counted ln to be found throughout Spain, from the North to the South.

Within Rioja there is a huge diversity of producers, from the farmer that makes small quantities of “house wine” to the giant Bodegas of the “Barrio de la Estación” in Haro. Both types of producers can make great wine, but it is incredibly impressive to see how those giants, produce and manage millions of bottles in annual production.

CVNE is short for Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España. It owns a whopping 545 hectares of vineyards, which only accounts for half of their production! CVNE produces wines from two of the three Rioja sub-regions, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta. The history of the bodega goes back back to 1879.

One of the most unique aspects to Rioja is their proclivity of aging wine in barrel and the cellar for long periods of time. Rioja modeled themselves after Bordeaux, preferring to age their wine in barrel. Unlike Bordeaux, they chose to age their wine in American oak, barrels that they handcrafted themselves. They also developed labelling wines with words such as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. In fact when you buy a Rioja, you are typically ordering by how long it has been aged.

The Gran Reserva of any Bodega is produced only in top vintages. In the case of the 2012 vintage, the winery considers it to be a very good vintage, although it saw its challenges. There was quite a bit of drought in 2012, and yields proved to be small, but in the end after a strict selection of grapes, a fantastic wine was produced.

The 2012 is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo. The alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel vats. The wine was aged in American and French oak for two years, then rested in bottles in the cellar for three years before its release.

This wine really opens up in the glass, with a beautiful nose of red fruits, tobacco leaf, and oak spice. It is medium bodied, balanced, with soft tannins on the long finish. We recommend decanting this for an hour before drinking. Pair it with grilled lamb chops.
