Curral Teles "Alpha" Tinto '18

Douro Valley

Curral Teles "Alpha" Tinto '18

Most winemakers go to school to learn how to make technically perfect wine. The best winemakers are those that question what they learned, and find the right way to farm and vinify based on the raw materials they are given.

Not only do I consider Mateus Nicolau de Almeida to be a good friend, he is in my opinion one of the best winemakers in all of Portugal. Mateus is one smart guy. He certainly doesn’t care about rules, or fashion, or really what people think he should do. He is a student of the Douro, of its history, and is making some truly unique and exceptional wines from his “winery” in the Douro Superior, on the outskirts of the village of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. I say “winery” because Mateus dug his winery into the ground by hand (and yes machine). This is far from a fancy winery. It looks like the planet of Nevarro in the Star Wars “Mandalorian” episodes. Except in this place, the only space alien you find is Mateus!

From this winery, Mateus produces three different labels. Trans Douro Express, a label that most of you know, which seeks to highlight the three different sub-regions of the Douro. Eremitas, shows three different single vineyard expressions of Rabigato. Then, the Curral Teles wines, from the vineyards surrounding the winery. These are wines Mateus calls “Human Wines.” They are identified by a Roman letter.

This wine is called “Alpha.” It is a “ Vinho Vermelho,” a vinification used by the Romans and Cistercian monks. The whole grapes are foot tread in a Calcatórium for three hours, then pressed in a vertical press and fermented and aged in concrete for eight months.

You haven’t tasted a Douro red like this before. It is truly unique. The color is very light from the whole grape treading, but the wine is wild. Full-bodied, very spicy with wild herbs and peppercorn notes, along with red and dark fruit. It is truly seamless, but still edgy and unique. This is a carnivores dream, try it with grilled lamb chops, or for our vegetarian friends, braised mushrooms with lots of herbs.

Only 60 bottles of this wine came to Illinois this year, so this is truly a special wine for my loyal Perman Wine customers.
