Daniel Dugois Arbois Chardonnay "Terre du Marne" '14

Daniel Dugois Arbois Chardonnay "Terre du Marne" '14

The Jura region is a beautiful place. Rolling green hills, quaint small villages and of course vineyards planted with well-known grapes such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but also local grapes such as Savagnin and Poulsard. One could view the region as an extension of Burgundy as Arbois is only 50 miles from Beaune. The uniqueness of the wines of the Jura make you conclude, that in fact, it is its own place with its own terroir. Chardonnay is a true terroir grape. You could open 10 different Chardonnays from various appellations in France and have very different wines. Jura Chardonnay is often overlooked, and so I'm excited to introduce you to this delicious example from Daniel Dugois. A small grower based in the village of Arsures, he sold his fruit for the first 9 years before producing his first wine in 1982. This Chardonnay is grown in the typical red clay of the region, which sits on red marl and clay over dolomitic rock. The grapes are handpicked, fermented with natural yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and aged on its lees. The result is an elegant Chardonnay, with pretty notes of flowers, orange peel and peach on the nose. Clean, crisp, with medium weight, this finishes with lingering mineral notes. Pair with classic roasted chicken.
