Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet "Les Gras Moutons" '19

Over the course of my 20+ years in the wine business, I have been a steadfast supporter of Domaine de la Pépière. Marc Ollivier, through the course of his career produced wines of sheer pleasure. Drink some of his Muscadet after release, but hold onto bottles to taste their development. This was always my pitch to my loyal customers, who then became loyal customers of Domaine de la Pépière. So it is particularly noteworthy to mention that 2019 marks Marc's last vintage before retirement. Over recent years he has worked alongside, Rémi Branger and Gwénaëlle Croix as they looked to take over the estate. I am confident that the wines will continue to live up to and exceed the standards that Marc built.

Now that I've wiped away the wine tears, I can tell you about why this wine, amongst others in Muscadet, are such important parts of the wine world.

Muscadet Sévre et Maine is an appellation in the Loire Vally dedicated to growing Melon de Bourgogne. This crossbred varietal, is particularly suited to the poor soils which feature different types of stone, granite, schist, and more. The proximity of the region to the Atlantic and its position towards the northern part of France make this a cool climate region, whose white wines offer plenty of refreshing acidity;

Muscadet, such as this, goes beyond simplicity, beyond light and acidic. "Les Gras Moutons" comes from the Cru of Monnières-Saint Fiacre. The parcel used for the wine has gneiss-based soils, mixed with clay and amphibolite stones. Fermented with natural yeast in stainless steel and aged on its lees for 9 months before bottling, this wine sets itself apart from others in the Pépière line-up.

The 2019 is a delicious farewell vintage. Beautiful aromas of white flowers, lemon peel and sea spray can be found on the nose. The wine is light and crisp, but builds with more citrus and mineral notes as it lingers on your palate. All things shellfish is a natural pairing, but if you have the space in your cellar, buy a case to drink over the next 5 to 10 years. Your food pairings will change as the wine develops. Merci Marc, your statue next to Guy Bossard will be built at the Muscadet Hall of Fame.
