Equis "Domaine des Lises" Crozes-Hermitage '17

When it comes to Crozes-Hermitage, it's impossible to not bring up the Graillot name. Alain Graillot is revered as one of the best with Syrah, having finessed his art since 1985 and gathering a cult-like following of devoted fans along the way. For his eldest son, Maxime, this could appear to be a daunting task, in fear of living in his father's shadow. But of course this didn't end up being the case - in fact not only did he continue his father's legacy by taking over primary winemaking duties (Alain is still involved), he has carved out his own path in winemaking excellence. After training under his father from a young age, in 2004 he decided to split his time between his father’s domaine and establishing his own winery, Equis. Knowing where the best land could be found, Maxime purchased vineyards in Beaumont-Monteux, just south of Alain’s plots in La Chene Vert. He also makes wines from 2 great parcels in Saint-Joseph and Cornas. His first accomplishment was converting these plots to organics, eliminating the use of any pesticides or herbicides as well as constantly ploughing and turning the earth. In result, Maxime's wines were an instant success. The wines are driven by energetic fruit, remarkably in essence of the expressive and terroir-driven Graillot style. Domaine Les Lises is from a small parcel, with vines around 35 years-old. The soils here are a mixture of gravel and clay. Given his and his father's connections to Burgundy (Alain trained at Domaine Dujac) the wines are all aged in previously used DRC barrels. The wine is fueled by uplifted and exuberant fruit character, balanced with hints of spice and violets. Remarkably elegant with silky tannins. Utterly pure Syrah. We still can't believe this is a feature this month, with how luxurious the wine comes across, not to mention that the wines are not always easy to get our hands on! This is a wonderful opportunity to stock up on such a special wine.
