Loire Valley

Domaine des Pothiers Chardonnay "Fou de Chêne" '17

Côte Roannaise is essentially an extension of the Loire Valley, although it is closer and has more in common with Beaujolais. The main city of the region is Roanne, and its vineyards cover a meager 200 hectares in total.

Domaine des Pothiers is one of the stars of the region. The Paires family have been in the Villemontais for over 300 years!  Originally farmers, they began to replant with vineyards in the 1970s, with a shift towards viticulture as the family's newfound passion. Today, the estate is primarily viticultural with 10 hectares of vines alongside maintaining a small herd of Limousin cows. The vineyards are all certified organic & biodynamic; the wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts with maturation typically in cement, although in this case in oak.

While more known for their red wines, their Chardonnay “Fou de Chêne” is a revelation. The nose is beautiful, with perfectly ripe apricot, pear, flowers and almond notes. The fruit just glides across the palate, with some weight and texture, but a seamless interplay of stone fruit, oxidative notes from the barrel aging, and an underlying minerality.

This is a whole lot of wine for $25.

The best compliment I could give it, is that it is a truly Côte Roannaise style of Chardonnay. A gastronomic wine, that shows it terroir and really brings a lot of joy to the drinker.
