Domaine Giacometti Patrimonio "Cru des Agriate" '17

Domaine Giacometti Patrimonio "Cru des Agriate" '17

Corsica seems a world away, yet there it is, only 56 miles from coastal Tuscany, and  110 miles from the Côte d'Azur in France. It is the fourth largest island in the Mediterranean, with an incredibly diverse landscape.

Wine is an important part of the identity of Corsica. Producers on the island tend to be small in production, almost always family run, working with the local varieties the island has to offer.

Domaine Giacometti was established in 1987, when father and son, Laurent and Christian purchased the property located in the appellation of Patrimonio. Today, Christian's children Sarah and Simon are involved in the day to day activities of the domaine.

Located just outside the village of Casta, Giacometti sets itself apart from other Patrimonio producers in that they have a granite base to their soils, along with the clay and limestone that Patrimonio is known for. This, along with their exposure and elevation bring freshness to the wines.

"Cru Des Agriate" is predominantly produced from Niellucciu, along with a few percent of Grenache. The grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel with daily pump-overs. The wine is aged on its lees for 14 months, and bottled without fining or filtration.

This is a classic and rustic Corsican red meant to be enjoyed alongside of food. Spice driven on the nose with red fruit and herb notes. On the palate, this has both plenty of acidity alongside grippy tannins. Pair this with the classic wild boar stew that you can find throughout Corsica.
