Domaine les Poëte Reuilly Blanc '13

While Sauvignon Blanc may be one of the world’s most popular white grape varieties, it is also one of the most misunderstood. We hear it from our customers all the time, they love Sancerre but hate New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They buy, age and drink the great Graves Blanc, but find Chilean Sauvignon Blanc to be too light, acidic and herbal. How is it that in a world full of Sauvignon Blanc, we don’t fully understand what it can achieve or how to assess it?

The answer is that wine is complex, and yes, even Sauvignon Blanc can be complex. The Loire Valley gives us a great glimpse into the differences and complexities of Sauvignon Blanc. Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Quincy, Reuilly, Menetou-Salon and the Touraine are appellations that produce Sauvignon Blanc. Each offering a different take on the grape varietal. Not only do you have the differences in terroir, but given that making wine is a series of decisions and interventions by the winemaker, we also must dive into what each producer is doing differently.

We are so excited to offer this terrific Sauvignon Blanc from Guillaume Sorbe of Domaine les Poëte on this month’s wine club. He has emerged as one of the great producers of Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley. Growing up in the region, as a young man he decided to not follow in his family’s viticultural history, rather work in restaurants, both in the kitchen and also as a sommelier. Eventually he decided to go school in Beaune, and landed back in the Loire Valley to start his domaine. He produces three Sauvignon Blanc, this one, from the appellation of Reuilly, one from Quincy, and one from Touraine. One of those decisions that Guillaume made when he started the domaine was to farm his 25 different small parcels Biodynamically, something that requires a great deal of time and energy. Each of these parcels is vinified separately and then blended prior to bottling.

The 2013 Reuilly Blanc is truly exceptional, and we are excited for you to taste a different expression of Sauvignon Blanc. It is showing its maturity, showing beautiful aromatics that combine some citrus elements, along with hints at petrol, candied grapefruit peel, lemon oil and mineral. The mouth feel is textural, but the acidity keeps coming. It is truly a complex bottle of wine. Try this alongside the classic bistro dish, Sole Meunière.
