Domaine Zafeirakis, Limniona Rosé '18

Domaine Zafeirakis, Limniona Rosé '18

Christos Zafeirakis is one of the most interesting Greek producers to emerge out of Greece in a time of a modern renaissance for winemaking in the country. He captivated us with his presence and passion when we tasted with him a couple months back, and the wines totally sealed the deal.

Near Mount Olympus, Thessaly is a region known for red wine production. Here, Christos worked immensely to reintroduce the relatively obscure native varietal Limniona, which was nearly extinct due to phylloxera. He now currently farms, organically, on a small 8-hectare plot cultivating indigenous grapes like Limniona and Malagousia as well as Chardonnay.

Limniona has proven to be great for rosé production, outside of its traditional red garb. This is a minerally rosé, with flinty characteristics alongside vibrant, crunchy cranberry and subtle stone fruit notes. This is a quite complex rosé that takes us away from Provence and to something refreshing and completely of is own. Perplexing, yet not to be overthought, because the enjoyment factor is huge here.
