El Porvenir "Amauta" Tannat '18

El Porvenir is a newer winery to the Argentinian scene.  Established in 2000, Lucía Romero Marcuzzi renovated a run-down winery, which included reviving the 50-65 year-old Tannat and Torrontés vines that were abandoned.  Salta is where some of the world's highest elevated vineyards exist (from 5400-6200 feet above sea level); in the northern area of winemaking regions for Argentina, it is dry, arid and slightly cooler (Mendoza is on low-lying, flatter land for example, and can get very hot).  Salta has gained a lot of attention recently because if its variety of elevated sites as well as being further removed from the typical urban setting, avoiding polluted air.

This is Porvenir's standard bottling of 100% Tannat.  The Tannat vines are planted in sandy soils, near a river that is dry all year round except in the summer, creating good drainage and struggle for the vines, as well as assisting in climatic moderation in the summer when the river is flowing.  Simply aged in tank, this is a side of Tannat that is interesting, full of natural character as it is presented on its own.  This wine shows fresh dark fruit, black currant, plum and figs, with hints of coffee and dark cacao and spice.  This will pair well with lamb, roasted potatoes, even pizza!
