Elio Grasso Barbera d'Alba '14

Elio Grasso Barbera d'Alba '14

Elio Grasso shows time and time again respect toward Piedmontese tradition (farmers first, winemakers second), keeping terroir at the forefront, while also challenging themselves as we move from year to year with subtle nuances that they continue to cultivate in the winery.

Elio Grasso was originally in the banking business in the city of Turin, but when his winemaking grandfather died, it encouraged him to turn a new leaf and he returned to his roots – since 1978 working on 18 acres of hills surrounding Monforte d’Alba.  Grasso and now with assistance from the entire family, has picked up where their ancestors left off, and they began growing grapes and producing wine, once again, with a focus on vineyard-specific selections for their Barolo as well as Barbera and Dolcetto grown is the same highly acclaimed areas.

Grasso treats their Barbera just as seriously as they do Barolo.  Old vines, about 35 years old, aged in barrique, with 2014 as its current vintage.  This is a serious Barbera with depth, structure and layers, but just as approachable as ever.  This is what you'll want time and time again at dinner, while you wait for your "Rüncot" Barolo to age in the cellar.
