Mateus Nicolau de Almeida is one of Portugal’s most talented winemakers. In 2016 he began to produce three white wines under the label, Eremitas. The name translates to “hermit,” an ode to those that lived a solitary life in the Douro Superior region, who were inspired to plant vines. 

Eremitas focuses on the noble, yet little known Douro grape variety called Rabigato. While often times in the region it is blended with other grapes such as Códega do Larinho, Gouveio or Viosinho, Mateus adores this grape and believes it can stand out on its own. 

While the Douro is known for its schist soil, there are still enough differences in different parcels to showcase the nuances that the soil has on Rabigato.

We are so excited to introduce to you the new release of Antão do Deserto, a single vineyard located near a stream at 350 meters of elevation. Even in the warmth of the Douro, Rabigato’s thick skin, and high skin to juice ratio, helps not only keep the natural acidity, but also give it great texture and mouthfeel.

So incredibly complex, even at a young age, this shows discreet aromatics of citrus fruit, talc powder, and a hint at herbs. In the mouth you can understand the brilliance of the varietal. While it has weight, it also has vibrancy. It is an extremely nuanced white wine, that should first, be tried on its own. Of course, like any great Portuguese wine, it is fantastic at the table. One of the 1000 ways to cook salt cod is to confit it in a bath of olive oil, along with some garlic, onions and potatoes. It would be a terrific match with that classic dish.
