Familia Mayol Garnacha Blanca '17

Familia Mayol Garnacha Blanca '17

As a wine lover, there is no greater excitement than getting to try something new, something unique. That doesn’t often happen in the world of Argentinean wines. Grapes like Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and for white wine Torrontés, are the usual suspects.

So we were very excited to try a Garnacha Blanca from Familia Mayol. This pure version of the varietal comes from a vineyard in the Valle de Uco located within the larger appellation of Mendoza. Matias Mayol of Familia Mayol is a third generation winemaker, whose family came to Argentina from Spain. Their focus of quality first starts in the vineyard with organic viticulture.

This was the first Garnacha Blanca planted in Argentina, and done so in a vineyard at an altitude of 1052 meters above sea level! The soil is alluvial, with loam and limestone mixed in. To show the precision of the fruit the wine is hand harvested, destemmed, fermented in stainless steel tank at low temperatures and rested in tank.

This is a beautifully aromatic white wine, with notes of white flowers, citrus, fresh peach and mineral. It has a silky texture, with some weight, but vibrant acidity and great overall balance. Great on its own, it also pairs well with shellfish.
