Friends' Wine "Muzukani" Saperavi '16

Friends' Wine "Muzukani" Saperavi '16

A few months ago, we featured a Saperavi by Vartsikhe.  This month's feature, is a new winery to the shop from the Republic of Georgia, Friends' Wine.  Same grape, however, what sets this apart is the bottling's classification, Muzukani.  Muzukani denotes a dry red wine made from 100% Saperavi from the Kakheti region in the Eastern part of the country.  It is also aged in oak casks for 3 years, where non-Muzukani Saperavi ages 2 years. The wine has added complexity, depth and flavor. Mukuzani is considered to be the best of the best for Georgian Dry Red wines made from Saperavi.   This is an extractive wine, highly capable of extensive aging.  We enjoy its deep, characteristic bouquet, due to its nature of being a teinturier-type grape variety, which is so unique for a single-varietal bottling.  This type of grape makes it suitable for blending, but when thoughtfully procured, there is structure, explosive flavors, rich tannins, balanced acidity and wild fruit flavors; all without excessive alcohol.  Highly capable of aging. Saperavi is a hardy variety, known for its ability to handle extremely cold weather.  We like to think Friends' Wine gives us the ability to handle extremely cold weather, too...
