Rhône Valley

Domaine Vernay Syrah "Fleurs de Mai" '18

Just like Burgundy, the majority of consumers think that all the wines of the Northern Rhône Valley are expensive.

While it is true that you will never stumble upon a $25 Hermitage or Côte-Rotie, that doesn't mean you can't find a great value from an iconic producer in one of those appellations.

The late, great, Georges Vernay is an icon in the world of Condrieu and Côte-Rotie. He was partially responsible for saving the Condrieu appellation, and 8 of the domaines hectares are Viognier vines in Condrieu. His daughter Christine has been making the wines for more than 20 years. She is an immensely talented winemaker, and the wines have great balance and length.

While the majority of the wines produced at Vernay aren't at everyday prices, this IGP Collines Rhodaniennes is true steal. Sourced from the hills just above the border with Condrieu, this wine is made entirely from 50+ year-old Syrah vines. The grapes are fully destemmed, fermented in stainless steel and aged in wooden vats for 8 months before bottle.

The 2018 is just delicious. Classic Syrah notes of cracked white pepper, dark cherry and olive tapenade on the long, fresh finish. Break out the duck confit, and open a bottle of this delicious Syrah from Domaine Vernay.
