Glinavos Zitsa "Protos Inos" '16

Winemaker Lefteris Glinavos was part of the wave of boutique vintners that were instrumental in changing the face and quality of Greek winemaking, which began in the 1970s. At the turn of the 19th century, Greek wine was dominated by large scale bulk‐wine companies who purchased fruit from local growers, inconsiderate to quality.

This predominant state of bulk wine production held steady until the late 60’s and into the 70’s, when a group of young wine‐makers‐‐whose own background in wine came from simple, village level production‐‐started to travel abroad for their vinicultural education and return to Greece to begin projects, independent of these massive companies. These winemakers shifted to what we understand today as “boutique wineries:” small scale operations whose whole purpose was to explore the furthest reaches of quality in their respective areas, utilizing natural elements of these respective areas.

Zitsa is quite unlike the rest of Greece. High up in the Pindus Mountains near the Albanian border, the lush greenery, streams and rivers almost make you feel like you’re on an entirely different planet. The area is more reminiscent of Austria or Switzerland, than the Mediterranean-influenced Greece we typically think of.  Thomas Glinavos took over the winery, started by his father Lefteris and has become the benchmark producer within the Zitsa PDO.

Thomas cultivates the best massale selection of Debina, a local varietal and sole grape authorized for the Zitsa PDO. While many Greek whites tend to be full and Mediterranean in style, the Zitsa is remarkably different: crisp, clean, and focused—showing off the benefits of the high elevation at which the grapes are grown.   Thomas preserves its natural integrity by allowing only a brief period of time spent in tank.   Limestone soils accentuate precise, bright acidity and lingering mineral undertones.  Alongside minerality, are notes of orange and lime citrus and a beautiful bouquet of fruit blossoms.  Lower alcohol levels maintain from cool days and cooler nights.  The wine bears resemblance to that of a dry Riesling.  And like Riesling, a wonderful companion to food!  Enjoy with salads made of fresh herbs, or with a variety of seafood, raw or cooked, or even a simple roasted chicken would be excellent.
