Heinrich Spindler Riesling Trocken '17

Heinrich Spindler Riesling Trocken '17

The Pfalz is a beautifully protected region, and almost feels pre-destined for vine growing where Riesling can reign supreme. The Haardt Mountains (an extension of Alsace's Vosges) protects the region from harsh, cold weather and rains. Behind the village of Forst, where Spindler's winery resides, the gentle slopes of vineyards gradually rise to meet the Palatinate Forest, part of the largest contiguous woodland area in Western Europe and a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The therefore abundantly sunny, dry region has a surprisingly mediterranean climate, where not only grapes grow, but citrus, palm and fig trees do as well. Not to mention the incredible, legendary soils found here, as like much of Germany, that gives Riesling that additional sharpness and exquisite terroir-driven quality that unmistakable and truly one-of-a-kind. Absolutely captivating considering the dynamic foundation of the land found here.

On top of a palatable canvas, predisposed for great viticulture, Markus Spindler, current generation at the helms, was predestined for continuing to cultivate what surrounds him. With a long lineage that can be traced to Burgundy over 400 years ago, winemaking is his ancestral calling. But according to him, it took stepping away and examining from a distance to see that what he has in front of him is undeniable, and an honor to uphold.

As the Spindler's draw energy from the nature that surrounds them, there is a great deal of respect that they give in return. For about 20 years, the 20 hectares of vineyards have not seen any herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers, and officially speaking, organic certified since 2012. An easy transition, with the framework already given.

In the cellar there is just as much respect found, as the goal from start to finish is to approach all of these enological steps with Fingerspitzengefühl, Markus says, using a German term that encompasses instinct and touch. “Precision, minerality, and fruit character are not to be lost."

The Riesling Trocken (dry) is at the epitome of the winery, to give you an idea of what Spindler is all about. It starts right here. The grapes for this wine are sourced from Spindler’s vineyard holdings in Friedelsheim, Niederkirchen and Forst. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged on its lees for 5-6 months.

This bone dry Riesling is a pure expression of Pfalz exotics: passion fruit, peach, almond blossom, sharp with minerality and acidity that seems to immortalize the varietal.
