Hobo Wine Co. Grenache "Sceales Vineyard" '14

Hobo Wine Co. Grenache "Sceales Vineyard" '14

Kenny Likitprakong is a self-proclaimed hobo. But we are not referring to the modern day definition here, but the kind that was once an embodiment of a culture and time, with leaders like Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen, a few that greatly inspired Kenny. The non-conforming, traveling to seek experience, not afraid to get dirty kind of hobo is what we are talking about here! Once he was ready to settle down, Kenny eventually applied his experience and poetic attributes of life towards winemaking. He isn't tied down to a single winery or vineyard, but instead houses a collection and variety of wines and sites that he sources from.

Although he has various wines enlisted under a myriad of labels, Hobo Wine Co. is the flagship label. This bottling of Grenache comes from Scales Vineyard in Anderson Valley, within the greater region of Mendocino. Anderson Valley is one of California’s coolest wine regions, with close proximity to the coast as the region runs parallel with the ocean, full of soft, rolling hills that protrude all the way down.

Grenache is not the most common varietal of this area, which makes this wine a super special bottling, not to mention that it is flat out delicious. The Sceales Vineyard is 4 acres of dry-farmed Grenache vines that are approaching 100 years old, with fully developed concentration and naturally low yields.

Aided by natural yeasts, the wine went through 100% whole cluster fermentation. They then foot tread the grapes, pressing lightly, limiting yields to avoid too much stemmy flavor or unwanted stem tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak foudres for about 17 months and then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

It is concentrated with bright fruit flavors, juicy tannins, full of classic Grenache straight forwardness. Although the wine is loaded with high-toned flavors, the wine is quite dense, enabling the wine to have aged wonderfully. 6 years in, the wine is drinking wonderfully, and is capable of continuing to drink well throughout the next upcoming years.
