Bierzo

José Antonio García "El Chuqeiro" Godello '15

The region of Bierzo is technically part of Castilla y León, but in the eyes of the wine community, we include it as part of the Galicia. In reality this is a transitional zone, with some of the climatic similarities of cool and rainy Galicia, with the sunshine, dryness and heat of Castilla y León.

The region gained notoriety in Spain right around the 1999 vintage, and in its infancy as a notable wine region, it struggled to offer an identity. The best wines were being produced from very old-vines, many at high elevation. Unfortunately, many producers in the early days, like their counterparts elsewhere in Spain, were creating wines with too much ripeness and often too much oak.

Luckily we are seeing another re-emergence within the region, with many young producers once again looking to rediscover the magic of the old-vines of Bierzo. José Antonio García and his wife Julia are producing a wide variety of excellent wines from vineyards that they are recuperating after years of neglect. Their vineyards are located in Valtuille de Abajo, and they make a broad range of wines, mainly focused on reds.

"El Chuqueiro" is a true reference point for white wines of the region. Made from the Godello grape, more commonly found in nearby Valdeorras, this single vineyard wine comes from 60 to 80 year-old vines. The La Chuqueiro site is planted between 550-600 meters of elevation. They rested 35% of the grapes and ferment with natural yeast in stainless steel tanks. No malolactic fermentation occurs, and the wine is aged on its fine lees for 6 months.

The result is one of the best and most unique expressions of Godello we have ever had. Expressive nose with notes of stone fruit, flowers, and iodine. Broad and rich on the palate, with more stone fruit and tropical notes, along with great underlying acidity and mineral notes.

Such a brilliant wine that is drinking in its prime. Worth pairing with crab legs or langoustines. A great wine.
