José Antonio Garcia "Unculín" Blanco '16

José Antonio Garcia "Unculín" Blanco '16

In Northwest Spain in Bierzo, husband & wife team, José Antonio Garcia and Julia Reña Garcia, have built their foundations from the ground up, literally with their own hands, which one could say has contributed as a source of renewal and rebirth for Bierzo.  The Garcia's move away from internationally-inspired styles have them getting back to the basics.  Organically farmed and in practice, these wines speak of the place; they are reminiscent of tradition.  With both having familial roots in the area and in winemaking & vineyard management, they are experts of Bierzo.  However, this was not José's immediate calling - he learned to appreciate fine wines when he worked in restaurants in Barcelona before going back to school for enology!

Their first vintage was born in 2011 and they have taken on renovating historic vineyard sites and have grown to 22 hectares of land so far, with a focus on preserving older vines native to the area - some up to 200 years old!

"Unculín Blanco" is a blend of Doña Blanca (70%) and Godello (30%).  This is a single vineyard selection in "Hundiñias" in the center of "Vatuille di Abajo" made from vineyards that span in age from 60-100 years old.  The wine is made in stainless steel and spends 8 months on its lees.  This is for you Chablis drinkers out there!  This wine is balanced with chalky minerality, delicate notes of citrus and apricot and finessed with florality and a hint of herbs.
