Kientzler Chasselas '17

Kientzler Chasselas '17

Ok Chasselas fans, do I have an incredible value for you!

The above sentence is what we “cork dorks” call a wine joke. We, like you, know that there aren’t a whole lot of die-hard Chasselas fans lurking out in the hinterlands.

We hope after tasting this wine that you become a card-carrying member of the Chasselas fan club.

If you are already an existing member, you likely live in Switzerland, which is the birth place of Chasselas, and has existed in their vineyards for over 400 years! In Switzerland, they often call the varietal Fendant.

Chasselas has made its way elsewhere, and in this case to the vineyards of Thierry and Éric Kientzler of Domaine Kientzler in Alsace. While not a typical varietal of the region, the Kientzler family does this grape justice.

The grapes come from two parcels in a single vineyard called Forst near Ribeauvillé. The vine age is 35 years-old on average. Kientzler uses no oak at their winery, everything in stainless steel tanks.

The result is a wonderfully aromatic white, full of notes of fresh lychee, lime zest and flowers. On the palate, this has some weight, but finishes, bone dry and mineral with some zesty herb notes. A tremendous wine for drinking with a wide range of foods, you can pair this with your turkey, or even roasted pork loin.
