When the wines of Domaine Kientzler first appeared in Chicago a year ago, we were so excited to have an opportunity to sell the wines. I was first introduced to them almost 20 years ago, when I lived in Portland, Oregon and they were imported by a small wholesaler. What I learned at that time, and still is true today, Kientzler represents what I like best about the wines of Alsace. Their ability to show complexity and terroir, while at the same time showing an innate ability to be great partners to food. This “Pinot Blanc” illustrates this perfectly.

When it comes to Pinot Blanc, in Alsace, there is an obscure rule about the labelling of the varietal. Alsace is already a bit of an outlier in France given that when the appellation was created in 1962, the region focused on listing the varietal on the label. Yet Auxerrois adds confusion to the Alsatian wine labelling system. Ready for this? In Alsace, bottles labeled Pinot Blanc can be a blend of those varietals, it can be all Pinot Blanc, or it can be all Auxerrois. The fact is Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois are different grapes. Pinot Blanc is a mutation of Pinot Noir. Auxerrois is a Pinot Noir crossed with Gouais Blanc. Stump your next know-it-all wine friend with that one!

Kientzler produces this wonderful “Pinot Blanc,” which is actually made entirely from Auxerrois. The average vine age of the Auxerrois is 35 years-old, and the soil is a mixture of marlstone and chalk/limestone.

The 2016 is really singing right now. It shows that classic soft melon note on the nose, along with hints at white cocoa and spice. The wine hits the palate with medium weight, flavors of pear and spice and a long, balanced finish.
