Leo Steen Chardonnay "80' Harrison" '16

At over 2,200ft. high in the Northern Mayacamas Mountain range, is the famed Tin Cross Ranch. Here, is a single block of Chardonnay vines, that were planted in 1980, and organically farmed ever since. The soils are volcanic and gravel based, providing excellent drainage. The sunshine is abundant, but it stays cool this high up in the mountains, allowing the grapes to retain acidity.

Once harvested, the grapes were pressed as whole clusters and then fermented with natural yeasts in equal parts 300-liter French Oak casks and stainless steel tank. The wine was aged for 15 months on the lees. A third of the casks were new and the balance neutral.

Leo's goal here is to create a textured and vibrant style of Chardonnay in contrast to the nervy and mineral style of the Santa Cruz Mountains, that he also bottles. It is creamy, but balanced with vibrant acidity. Aromas of mandarin peel, Meyer lemon curd and hints of white pepper and white flowers. The palate echoes the citrus flavors with its creaminess and energy to a lingering finish.

This white deserves to be paired with heartier dishes revolving around chicken or salmon. As we move into fall, any dish with highlighted ingredients like pumpkin, butternut squash and even apples would be fantastic as well. Tortelloni di Zucca, anyone?
